LiveFeed has reported that AMC’s 90-minute series premiere of The Walking Dead was a titanic “winner not only with the largest numbers in AMC’s history” (well above Breaking Bad and Mad Men, their other bench-mark shows), but also the “largest 18-49 audience of any series premiere on any cable network this year.” That is frakking awesome! With an “estimated 5.3 million viewers watched the debut episode, and it scored 3.3 in the coveted adults 18-49 demo.” Which of course is almost better, that demographic is notorious for being so fickle and hard to reach, not only in television and film, but most notably in advertising.
I can’t really say I’m surprised with these numbers though. Not only was everyone I know pumped to see the show, but everyone I talked to afterward was praising how amazing it was. The production was top notch, let’s hope they keep this detailed development of characters through out, and of course the production value. This will be the first television show outside of FireFly that I will be buying on Blu Ray when it comes out.
Stay tuned for our round table discussion with guests Ritiland, John (from previous shows), Sam and FatGuy, after Sunday’s viewing on this week’s episode of JunkCast.
I’m definitely not too surprised by that. I’ve never seen hype surround a TV show quite like The Walking Dead. They really raised the bar, not only for how all zombie stories should be treated going forward, but also for how TV shows need to present themselves. The contest site crashed from the moment they released the codeword for the walk-on contest, and I can only imagine it will happen again this week.
Other TV networks pay attention, because if you aren’t garnishing these results with other shows…you’re doing it wrong.
